Semester Registration

In accordance with no.10 of the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra, the registration is done at the beginning of each academic year and may refer to the entire academic year or only one semester, safeguarding special situations, namely those related to re-admission or change of institution/course pair.

In practical terms, UC Students may opt by register only for one semester, which is an especially relevant situation to late registrations. The option for this registration is carried out during the registration at Inforestudante, that is, if you register only for curricular units of a single semester, when you seal your registration the system will ask you if you intended to register only for one semester.

Please NoteWe inform all students admitted later, e.g., in the 3rd or extraordinary applications phase at the UC, that they should pay attention to the date of their registration and consider the possibility of registering only for the 2nd semester.

[1.] With the option of registering for the 2nd semester, a tuition fee payment plan and its instalments is generated concerning the 2nd semester, thus giving you more time to plan and begin the classes and assignments of your Master’s/PhD course.

[2.] It is essential to contact the Faculty that is responsible for your cycle of studies in order to appraise if it is possible to attend only the 2nd semester. However, if you register only for that semester, you may withdraw your registration until 31st January with a minor impact on the tuition fee. The registration fee is always due.

[3.] In addition, you may make changes to your registration for curricular units of the 2nd semester until 31st March, at InforEstudante.

[4.] You should consider your options very carefully, because if you select annual curricular units or units from the 1st semester, an annual instalments’ payment plan will be generated, which implies that when you register, you are immediately obliged to pay the instalments with a payment deadline until and including the month of the registration.

In summary:

It is possible for a student to register only for the 1st or 2nd semester if he/she chooses to attend ONLY curricular units of that semester.
The tuition fee to be paid will be 50 per cent of the annual tuition fee amount.
The Registration for only one semester is counted as 0.5 for the purpose of applying the expiration system.
Even if the student registers only for 2nd semester curricular units, he/she has to do it within the normal registration deadline at the beginning of the academic year.
At the UC there are no provisional or conditional registrations, neither due to visa issuance and opening of notice for scholarships nor due to other specific situations.

In accordance with the new Academic Regulation (RAUC), after sealing your registration you become obliged to pay the tuition fee, and if you withdraw your registration, you only become exempt from paying the instalments concerning the months subsequent to the date of the withdrawal.

»» For example, if you register on 1st November for both semesters (annual registration), you become obliged to pay the instalments from the beginning of the academic year and all of them have a payment deadline in November. If you withdraw on the same day, you only become exempt from paying the instalments as from December.

Is registration made annually ?

Yes, it is, even when there is only a registration for annual curricular units. In order to be bound to the UC and a cycle of studies/course the registration is mandatory at the beginning of each academic year. This is the only way for the student to enjoy the UC resources.

  • Although the registration may be made for a semester, it is not made in each semester. Therefore, it is ALWAYS mandatory to register at the beginning of the academic year.

Where do you register ?

All the academic procedures, including the registration for the academic year, are undertaken at InforEstud@nte. The system recognises the registration as being on a full-time or part-time basis, and asks the student to confirm and accept his/her registration on that basis.

What are your options regarding registration ?

There may be an annual or a semester registration and within it you may choose between a full-time and a part-time system in accordance with the following table:
Registration System Registration Conditions Tuition Fee Percentage
Full-time Annual
  • Registration for more than 30 ECTS credits, up to the maximum number of credits established for the course.
  • Registration for annual curricular units, 1st and 2nd semester.
100 per cent
 Semester
  • Registration for more that 15ECTS credits, up to half of the maximum number of credits of full-time registration.
  • Registration only for the 1st semester or for the 2nd semester.
50 per cent
Part-timeAnnual
  • Registration for <=30ECTS credits
  • Registration for annual curricular units, 1st and 2nd semester.
60 per cent
 Semester
  • Registration for <=15ECTS credits
  • Registration only for the 1st semester or for the 2nd semester.
30 per cent

Why choose a registration only for the 2nd semester  ?

Typically, students should register only for the 2nd semester if they are not sure of being able to attend curricular units in the 1st semester, whether it is because they are waiting for the visa to come to Portugal or another motive that prevents them from attending regularly the classes during that period.

What are the advantages of this registration ?

The registration only for the 2nd semester implies that a tuition fee payment plan is generated only concerning that semester and its instalments, which gives you more time to plan and begin attending classes or carrying out your master’s/PhD works.

  • Contacting the Faculty responsible for your cycle of studies is crucial in order to appraise if there are conditions for you to attend only the 2nd semester. However, if you register only for that semester, you may withdraw your registration until 31st January with a minor impact on the tuition fee.
  • You may also undertake changes of registration concerning 2nd semester curricular units until the end of March at InforEstud@nte.
  • The registration’s fee is always due, and International Students must also pay 30 per cent of the tuition fee at the moment of the registration.

If you register also for the 1st semester can you withdraw later ?

Yes, you can. But you are obliged to pay the due instalments until the month of your withdrawal. Therefore, think carefully about your options, because if you select annual or 1st semester curricular units, an instalments’ annual payment plan will be generated, which means you become immediately obliged to pay the instalments with a deadline until and including the month of the withdrawal.
