Applicants for 3rd Cycle / PhD/ Doctoral degree programmes

The doctoral degree programmes of UC, also called 3rd cycle degree programmes. Programs at the University of Coimbra are offered by ten education and research units: 8 Faculties, the College of Arts and the Interdisciplinary Research Centre. These encompass nearly all study fields.

To help make your search easier please select the desired unit to narrow your search to specific topics. This will help you find essential information about available programs, namely application deadlines, number of available spaces and the admissions criteria.

To look for the doctoral degree programmes that interest you most, write the name of a study area in the field "search term" or filter the programme by education unit/ department in the courses page of UC.

At UC, the activities of doctoral students and professors in this advanced study level are carried out in UC research centres and laboratories, in collaboration with its international peers. See the list of research centres here.


  • Current and former University of Coimbra students are not required to submit a copy of their diploma.
  • Course outlines and hourly course loads are only required by those requesting equivalency credits. These documents are not required if the original program was administered by the Faculty to which you are applying.
