The Foundation Year Programme in Portuguese Language (FYP-PL) is aimed at students who have completed the secondary education and passed the national higher education entrance exams (for instance Gaokao, Liankao, A-Level and International Baccalaureate) recognized by UC but who do not have the required level of Portuguese language proficiency (B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) to enter UC undergraduate degree programmes.
It provides intensive training and customised follow-up to prepare students to gain the necessary skills and proficiency in the Portuguese language (from A1 to B1 level). FYP-PL is lectured by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of UC, which has 90 years of experience in the teaching of Portuguese for foreigners, research and advanced courses in the area of teaching Portuguese as a second language.

At the end of the programme, students are expected to:

Assessment and final classification
The final grade is expressed in a 0-20 scale, calculated using the weighted average grades earned in each approved coursed unit. Course units’ assessment combines continuous evaluation (60%) and a final examination (40%).
The minimum passing grade for each course unit is 10 marks.
Application and enrolment
Students apply directly to the undergraduate degree programme of their preference and indicate in the application form that they do not have the B1 level of proficiency in Portuguese language. If they meet all the other degree entry requirements and are selected, they should enrol in the undergraduate degree of their preference just like other selected students. Then, before the beginning of the academic year, the Academic Services of UC enrol them in the Foundation Year Programme. Students that complete this programme successfully, at the end of one year, can proceed directly to the undergraduate degree for which they were selected. This is in order to guarantee the students’ vacancy in their chosen undergraduate degree.
