The European charter for researchers

The European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers

The European Charter for Researchers is a set of general principles which specifies the rights and the responsibilities of researchers as well as of the employers and of researchers’ sponsors.

This charter emphasises the value of mobility as a means of enhancing the professional development of researchers, and addresses all researchers in the European Union at all stages of their career and covers all fields of research in both the public and private sectors.

The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers consists of a set of principles and requirements that should be followed by employers or sponsors when appointing or recruiting researchers. These principles and requirements complement those outlined in the European Charter for Researchers and seek to ensure that values such as transparency in the recruitment process and equal treatment of all applicants, in particular with regard to the development of an attractive, open and sustainable European labour market for researchers, are observed.
