Msc Physical Education Teaching at Basic and Secondary Level

Objectives

The Master in Physical Education Teaching course promotes scientific knowledge within the basic sciences of physical activity, contextualized in the areas of specialized educational training, physical education specific didactics and school organization.  Learning is mediated by unknown professional exercise situations, in which problem-solving and self-learning skills are mixed with educational research competencies.

This master course provides a specialized training for student’s global use of knowledge in multidisciplinary contexts of professional work at basic and secondary level of education, namely in the areas of curriculum development, applied educational research and school organization.

A] Fundamental competencies

A1.
Retrieval of research data and utilization of quantitative and qualitative research methods in professional contexts of diagnostic and evaluation of people, subjects and school organization.
A2.
Use of existing research models in the design and justification of multicultural projects  and in research of social context and inequalities within school organizations.
A3.
Take part in action-research projects and in school administration and organization activities, integrating previous knowledge from 1st cycle of studies in complex decision making amongst contexts of limited information.
A4.
Originally develop and apply models of curriculum development in socio-cultural diversified contexts.
A5.
Integration of ethics and epistemological reflection in assessment processes of individual and organizational decision making and their consequences.
A6.
Develop critical participation and cooperation on school political decisions and in the design of relevant educational or communitarian projects.
A7.
Organize the process of gathering professional competencies as a vehicle for learning for life, supported by experience, by research findings and pedagogical supervision resources.

[B] Specific competencies

B1.
Use research findings related to teaching and learning process to recognize relationships regarding social context and student achievement inequalities and to implement differentiating pedagogical strategies, appropriately to each student.
B2.
Be able to design, plan, develop and evaluate educative and curriculum projects within different professional and institutional decision levels.
B3.
Organize teaching and promote learning of physical and sports activities, creating original plans with proper learning solutions and adequate class organization in reference to context and national physical education core curriculum.
B4.
Diagnose educative situations with observation techniques and qualitative and quantitative data analysis, in order to understand the complexity and specificity of pedagogical phenomena and pedagogical situations.
B5.
Take part in in action-research projects and participate in school’s administration and organization.
B6.
Develop reflexive self-learning and the abilities of pedagogical supervision and teacher continuous education


[C] Cross competencies
Transverse competencies from 1st cycle of studies are developed in a supervised pedagogical practical context during 1 school year, with special attendance to the following competencies:


C1. Instrumental competencies

a. Analysis and synthesis capabilities;
b. Information management (collect, recover and information analysis from different sources)
c. Problem solving skills

C2. Inter-personal competencies

a. Workgroup leadership skills;
b. Work capability within interdisciplinary teams;
c. Work capability among international contexts;
d. Ability for using ethical justified actions facing dilemmatic situations.

C3. Systemic competencies

a. Research skills;
b. Self-learning abilities;
c. Practical knowledge use ability
d. Adaptation capabilities;
e. Promotion of quality.

Description of the Curricular StructureThis master course has four semesters, includes one year of practicum at one basic or secondary school and the assignment of a final report respective to the practicum year. Course has 120 ECTS, and its structure is organized by the following 4 areas:

Admission Requirements

Candidates for the master's program must satisfy one of the following requirements:

a. 1st cycle graduated students or with legal equivalence, as stated in public proposal advise

b. Foreign graduated students, obtained in a Bologne recognized 1st cycle of studies course, with 120 ECTS in Physical Education and Sports area, revealing written and spoken proficiency in Portuguese language.

c. 1st cycle graduated students within these areas that fulfil minimum requirements defined by Scientific Council of Faculty of Sports Science and Physical Education at Coimbra University.
