Library
Built in 1911, the Library of the Faculty of Law, University of Coimbra has been adjudged the fifth best Law library in the world.
In the library you can find, in addition to the general library collection, special collections set up by libraries of works owned by some of the most remarkable teachers and jurists in the Law Faculty:
- Alberto dos Reis, Beleza dos Santos, Paulo Merêa, Eduardo Correia, Ferrer Correia, Orlando de Carvalho.
A new building, designed by the architect Siza Vieira, will serve to house, preserve and display its rich collection of books and documents, which at present occupies about 7,000 metres of shelving.

Getting to know the Library
Historical Note
The Library School has its origins in the creation, by
a legal decree of 18 April 1911, of a scientific research centre - similar to
others being set up at that time in several European universities - which was
named the Law Institute.
Collections
About 400,000 volumes - books and magazines – currently occupy approximately 7,000 metres of shelves. In addition to this printed collection there is a set of electronic documents available online or by ordering a copy on the relevant medium.

(*) Please note that the bibliographic records relating to documents held at the Law Faculty on 1 August 2007 are currently being converted by the University of Coimbra General Library to the Millennium computer system. For this reason, searches of both systems should be made.
