Objectives

Instrumentation Development

This group develops novel optoelectronic instrumentation for ocular imaging. Research activities focus in Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) instrumentation and techniques for in vivo quantitative fundus imaging in small animal models and Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) for metabolic imaging of the cornea, in animals and humans.

In OCT, we are exploring innovative approaches to increase image resolution and to expand the range of retrieved information, namely by exploring the content of the phase signal and the statistical properties of laser speckle.

In FLIM, we are exploring single and two-photon fluorescence imaging of metabolic co-factors NAD and FAD, to obtain quantitative information on the metabolic state of corneal tissues. We are also using Second Harmonic Generation, based on 12 fs laser pulses, to image the structural organization of corneal stroma collagen fibers.
