Doctoral Programme in Health Sciences
The Doctoral Programme in Health Sciences is coordinated by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra and grants degrees in the areas of Medicine, Dentistry, Biomedical Sciences, Nursing and Health Technologies. The Programme has been structured to reflect the expertise of the Faculty of Medicine and offers a unique opportunity for highly motivated students wishing to pursue a doctoral degree in Health Sciences.
The training opportunities encompass laboratory-based research, pre-clinical and translational research, as well as clinical research. There will be opportunities for students to tailor their own curriculum to integrate a variety of different subjects by selecting the courses and lab rotations that best meet their training expectations. The programme comprises:
- - Mandatory courses in core areas;
- - Optional courses in areas of specialization;
- - An annual plan of seminars;
- - Laboratory rotations (or equivalent hands-on activities);
- - Research leading to the doctoral thesis.
The Doctoral Programme in Health Sciences enrolls students per year holding a degree in Medicine, Dentistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Nursing, Health Technologies, or other areas of relevance to pursue a Doctoral degree in Health Sciences.

Applications for the second stage of the Doctoral Programme in Health Sciences are are open only for the students who have obtained a grant (eg FCT) that support the entire duration of the Doctoral Programme.
The Doctoral Programme in Health Sciences articulates with the Inter-University Doctoral Programme in Ageing and Degeneration of Complex Biological Systems funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, as part of a collaborative effort between the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the New University of Lisbon and the School of Health Sciences at the University of Minho.
