Kg-free is a manualized acceptance, mindfulness & compassionate-based group intervention for women struggling with their weight developed in CINEICC by Lara Palmeira (PhD student), with the supervision of Professor José Pinto-Gouveia and Professor Marina Cunha. The intervention comprises 10 weekly group sessions plus 2 booster fortnightly sessions of 2h30 hours each, run in small groups (from 10 to 12 participants). The intervention was based upon pre-existent ACT and Mindfulness-based protocols for people with eating and weight issues. Moreover, several exercises were adapted to address specifically weight, body and eating issues.
Kg-free aims to reduce weight self-stigma and unhealthy eating behaviors and promote quality-of-life by targeting weight-related experiential avoidance and self-criticism patterns. The intervention aims to develop emotion regulation skills based on acceptance, mindfulness and self-compassion towards eating and weight difficulties in order to increase participant’s well-being and quality-of-life.
The intervention was designed to be delivered by two clinical psychologists with previous training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness and Self-compassion. Materials include a therapist’s manual (including all session exercises), as well as, a participants’ manual (including the main session content, examples and exercise sheets). Also, all audio exercises from Kg-Free were recorded and made available for participants.
Results from the RCT showed that the intervention was effective in reducing participants’ weight self-stigma, unhealthy eating behaviors and increase physical exercise and quality-of-life. Moreover, at post-treatment participants from Kg-Free intervention revealed lower levels of experiential avoidance and self-criticism and higher levels of mindfulness and self-compassion abilities.
