Biology, especially in its translational and interdisciplinary aspects is a fundamental Science in the 21rst Century, and all indicators point to an increased investment in related fields in the next decades, namely in terms of Experimental Biology and Biomedicine. Given the critical mass at the University of Coimbra (including Faculty of Science and Technology, Pharmacy and Medicine, as well as Research Centers and Hospitals) this is a niche of excellence that urges further development. PhD Program in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine aims to train a new generation of highly skilled professionals that will be internationally competitive in terms of basic scientific research, the development of novel therapeutic and diagnostic tools,relevant clinical and pre-clinical models, as well as biotechnological applications. Training will be trans and multidisciplinary, to guarantee a wide range of knowledge and expertise networks, crucial for innovation. Students will be trained and evaluated according to strict and internationally validated criteria, and will be globally employable in Academia, Research institutes, Government agencies, Hospitals and Pharmaceutical or Biotechnology companies. They will also be able to create their own companies in a growing field
