Filipe et al. applied molecular dynamics simulations to analyze the behavior of widely used fluorescent membrane probes in lipid bilayers that mimic the properties of cellular membranes. The results permitted explaining a variety of published experimental observations in terms of the molecular interactions of the probes with the membrane lipids. The improved understanding of the behavior of these fluorescent phospholipid analogs is very useful for researchers who utilize such probes to study membrane structure and dynamics using fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging.
