The Rector, Professor João Gabriel Silva, and the Vice-Rector, Professor Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho, accompanied the President of the Portuguese Republic, Professor Aníbal Cavaco Silva, in his official visit to the People's Republic of China,in May 2014.
This visit aimed not only to promote companies but also to promote Portuguese universities, with particular emphasis on the strategic importance that the Portuguese language has in the current economic environment.
The University of Coimbra (UC), alongside the official programs organized by the Portuguese Agency for Investment Promotion (AICEP) and the Camões Institute (Institute for the promotion of the Portuguese Language), developed a series of bilateral meetings with prominent higher education institutions in Shanghai and Beijing, namely: Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai International Studies University; and Beijing Foreign Studies University, Peking University, University of International Relations, China University of Political Science and Law, University of International Business and Economics and Beijing Jiaotong University.
Another novelty of this visit is that the UC is preparing the possibility of receiving, starting in the academic year of 2014/2015, Chinese students that can apply with the results obtained in the Gaokao (Chinese National Higher Education Entrance Examination).
