Bráulio de Almeida e Sousa
The author began his career in psychiatry in 1948, as a student in the Sobral Cid Psychiatric Nursing Hospital.He completed his medical degree in 1959 and worked in the Central Dispensary of the I.A.P. Southern Area.
In 1963 the French Government granted him a scholarship to do research in clinical psychopharmacology under Deniker at St. Anne’s Hospital, Paris. He then worked as an intern at St. Alban Hospital, the birthplace of institutional psychotherapy.
When he returned to Portugal in 1969, he was invited to set up and manage the recently founded Setúbal Mental Health Centre, where he worked until his retirement in 1992 following a ministerial decision to abolish mental health centres.
He is a co-founder of SPESM and the Dr. Fernando Ilharco Mental Health Association, in which he is still actively involved.
