Fernando J. S. Correia
He has been a biologist since 1988 and holds a Master’s Degree in Animal Ecology, specialising in scientific illustration, and has developed pioneering digital techniques for scientific illustration in Portugal. He was responsible for the introduction of scientific illustration into higher education (Biological Design Methods at the University of Évora in 1996). He has also taught at the Piaget Institute and at Leiria Polytechnic Institute. He is currently a teacher at the Department of Biology of the University of Aveiro, where he coordinates training courses in Scientific Illustration and manages the Scientific Illustration Laboratory.
He has been responsible for the production of more than seventy-five intensive courses in Scientific Illustration. He has produced more than eighty-five publications, including his latest, Mealhada - Naturezas sem igual, and has co-authored a further thirty articles and books nationally and internationally.
He was co-founder and first president of the Portuguese chapter of the GNSI, and continues an active member, with work published in its Newsletters and Journals on a number of occasions. Among other specialist work, he was one of four Portuguese scientists invited to contribute to the the well-known Guild Handbook of Scientific Illustration (Elaine Hodges, 2ª ed.). He has participated in more than seventy exhibitions (collective and individual) on a national and international level in the United States, Brazil, Argentina and Europe (England, Spain, France and Italy) and has received prestigious awards and distinctions in Portugal, the USA and Europe.
