João Paulo Avelãs Nunes
He was born in 1965 and is Auxiliary Professor of Contemporary History at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra and he is also a Researcher at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies on the 20th Century at the University of Coimbra. He completed a Degree in History in 1987 which was followed by training as a History teacher in 1989 at the above named institution. In 1993 he completed his Master’s in Portuguese Contemporary History with a thesis on the economic and social history of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra between 1911 and 1971. He obtained his Doctorate in 2006 in Contemporary History with a dissertation on “The Estado Novo and Tungsten (1933-1947). He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Portuguese History Journal and of the journal Estudos do Século XX.
He has done research and published in areas such as the history of the Coimbra CADC and youth organisations in the Estado Novo and on fascism, industrial archeology and cultural heritage, the history of the mining sector and the Second World War, the history of the church and of the Portuguese “Catholic Good Works”, on museology and the teaching of history.
