He is Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra where he has supervised courses in the field of surgical pathology.
Between 1988 and 1995 he served as Chief of Surgery II at Coimbra University Hospitals and since 1995 he has been Chief of Surgery I.
In 1988 he received the commission to set up the Animal Experimentation Laboratory at Coimbra University Hospitals. His involvement in many workshops stemmed from this activity which also involves training at the undergraduate and graduate level, the Master’s Degree in Animal Experimentation and he also monitors the development of surgical training and reseach including dissertations and theses at Master’s and Doctoral level.
Professor Patrício has also served as President of the Portuguese Microsurgery Association, the Portuguese Surgery Association, and the Groupe pour l'Avancement de la Microchirurgie (GAM) the latter of which he co-founded. He also took part in the setting-up of the The Portuguese Association for Experimental Pathology and the Science in Laboratory Animals Society, over whose assemblies he presides, and is a member of the Centro for Histophysiology, Experimental Pathology and Developmental Biology approved by the Foundation for Science and Technology in 1998.
He also a member of Académie National de Chirurgie (Paris) “Associé Étranger” and the National Academy of Medicine.
