He is Full Professor at the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra. He is also a member of the Scientific Commission, in charge of the publication of the works of Pedro Nunes, the President of the Department of Mathematics Scientific Commission, and a Board Member of the International Linear Algebra Society. He was President of the University of Coimbra Mathematical Centre and Vice-President of the International Centre for Mathematics. Among his scientific research interests, the following areas have taken precedence: matrix theory, spectral inequalities for linear operators and the History of Mathematics in Portugal.
