João Ramalho Santos
He is a Professor in the Department of Life Sciences of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra and a Researcher at the Centre for Neurosciences and Cellular Biology where he leads the Reproductive Biology and Stem Cells group and coordinates the Doctoral Program in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine. In a different, lighter context, he is co-owner of the cartoon bookshoop “Dr. Kartoon” in Coimbra and a cartoon book critic in a column called: “JL: Jornal de Letras, Artes e Ideias” and via the blog “As Sequências Rebeldes”. He has collaborated in the publication of “Nemo”, “Quadrado”, “Ler” and “Vértice” and in conjunction with cartoon festivals. On the comic book scene he has been co-author of study books and in the dissemination of As Cidades Visíveis [“Visible Cities”] (with João Miguel Lameiras), Uma Revolução Desenhada: O 25 de Abril e a Banda Desenhada [“An illustrated revolution: the 25th of April in Comic Strips”] and Coimbra na BD [“Coimbra in Comic Strips”] (with João Paulo Paiva Boléo and JM Ladeiras); and books of fiction: “A Revolução Interiro”, “Crossroads” (with José Carlos Fernandes and JM Ladeiras). He has also translated the classic work “Krazy Kat” by George Herriman into Portuguese. Apart from cartoon books, he has written a romance Portland-Portugal: Um Voo Doméstico [“Portland-Portugal: domestic flight”] and short stories with a scientific theme on the site Lablit.com and in the magazine “Nature”.
