José Manuel Azevedo e Silva

He is Full Professor at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra and there he is the Director of the History and Overseas Expansion Institute. He was a Member of the Management Council of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra and President of the Assembly of Representatives. He is also a researcher at the History of Society and Culture Institute at the University of Coimbra. His work has covered the areas of History of the Discoveries and the Portuguese Expansion and the History of Brazil. His research led to the publishing of various papers, namely: A Madeira e a construção do Mundo Atlântico (Séculos XV-XVII) [“Madeira and the building of the Atlantic World (XVth - XVIIth centuries)”], Funchal, C.E.H.A., 1995; Tratado dos Feitos de Vasco da Gama e seus Filhos na India [“Treaty on the Achievements of Vasco da Gama and his Children in India”], Diogo do Couto unpublished work, Lisbon, Edições Cosmos, 1988 (in collaboration with João Marinho dos Santos); Descrição e História do Reino das Ilhas Canárias [“Description and History in the Kingdom of the Canary Islands”] (bilingual version of the Italian Leonardo Torriam manuscript), Lisbon, Edições Cosmos, 1999; Vasco da Gama. A Honra, o Proveito, a Fama e a Glória [“Vasco da Gama. Honour, Gain, Fame and Glory”], Porto, Editora Ausência, 1999 (in conjunction with João Marinho dos Santos); A Historiografia dos Descobrimentos, através da correspondência entre alguns dos seus vultos [“The Discoveries Historiography through the correspondence between its most famous people”], Coimbra University Press, 2004 (with collaboration of João Marinho dos Santos).
