Ludwig Scheidl

He holds a Doctorate in German Literature from the University of Coimbra (1977), and was Full Professor (he retired in 2007) at the Faculty of Letters of University of Coimbra, where he taught and carried out research in the area of German Literature and Culture. His studies are on the following periods: fin-de-siècle Modernism, Expressionism, German-speaking authors in the 1920’s, in exile and after 1945. He studied 20th century theatre and as Director of the Collection on 20th century Austrian theatre and he also translated several plays into the Portuguese language. Within Comparative Literature he has studied mostly the theme of Faust in German (Goethe) and Portuguese (Fernando Pessoa) literature. Amongst his latest published work is Estudos de Literatura de Expressão Alemã e Portuguesa [“Studies on Literature from German and Portuguese Speaking countries”], Faculdade de Letras, Colecção Estudos 45, Coimbra 2004 and translated by H.v. Hofmannsthal, O Indeciso-Comédia em três Actos [“The Indecisive-Comedy in three parts”] (Coimbra Minerva, 2006).
