He is Full Professor Emeritus in History in the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra, having been a member of the Institute of the History and Theory of Ideas. He is the coordinator of the Centre for 20th Century Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Coimbra (CEIS29). He was the Director of the journal História das Ideias [“History of Ideas”] and the journal Estudos do Século XX [“20th Century Studies”].
He taught Modern and Contemporary History and Theory of History at the University of Coimbra and also taught at foreign universities. As a researcher he has dedicated himself to several themes, he has coordinated and continues to coordinate Master’s and Doctoral theses, and has published books and articles, some of which are on the Portuguese Estado Novo. Among the studies he either wrote or co-wrote on this theme, the following are of particular note: História e Ideologia [“History and Ideology”] (1989), A Universidade de Coimbra e o Estado Novo [“The University of Coimbra and the Estado Novo”], (1999), and O cinema sob o olhar de Salazar [“The cinema in Salazar’s view”] (2000). He also coordinated the work Candidatos da Oposição à Assembleia Nacional do Estado Novo (1945-1973) [“Opposition candidates to the National Assembly in the Estado Novo” (2013), which was written by Mário Matos e Lemos.
