Norberto Pinto dos Santos
He is a geographer and holds a Doctorate in Human Geography. He is a Full Professor in the Geography Department of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra and is a researcher at the Centre for the Study of Geography and Territorial Planning. Throughout his university career he has developed work in the areas of social and economic geography, economic geography, leisure, tourism and territorial planning, and he has been part of several research projects of which the following are of particular note: Social-economic dynamism and the (re)organization of the territory: the processes of urbanisation and productive restructuration; Dynamics of local productive and reproductive spaces: the mobility of investment and development of medium-sized cities; Organization and revitalisation of rural areas, Portugal and the contradictions of modernity – territory, development and marginality.
He has published two books: Lazer. Da libertação do tempo à conquista das práticas [“Leisure. From the liberation of time to the conquering of practices.”] Coimbra: Coimbra University Press (2008) (co-author); A sociedade de consumo e os espaços vividos pelas famílias [“Consumer Society and the places where families live.”] Lisbon: Edições Colibri (2001).
He has been a member of the Management Committee of the Portuguese Association of Geographers since 2008; Director of the Degree in Tourism, Leisure and Heritage since 2009. He was President of the Scientific Commission of the Geographical Studies Society, Coordinator of the Geographical Studies Centre, President of the Commission on the Supervision of Educational Training at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra, Director of the Institute of Geographical Studies at Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra, member of the Assembly of the University of Coimbra, member of the Management Council of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra.
