Pedro Manuel Saraiva
He finished his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Coimbra in Chemical Engineering and did his Doctorate at MIT. He holds the title of Agregação.
He has been teaching at the University of Coimbra since 1984, where he is a Full Professor. He has served as President of the Pedagogical Council, Pro-Rector and Vice-Rector.
He works as a Member of Parliament, being the Vice-Coordinator of the Committee on Financial, Innovation and Energy matters and is part of the Education and Science Committee as well as the Working Group on Regional Development.
He was the President of the Republic’s advisor on Higher Education (2006-2009) and President of the Regional Coordination and Development Commission – Central Region (2004-2005).
He founded QUAL – Formação e Serviços em Gestão da Qualidade, Lda. [Services and Training in Quality Management] and Observatório Nacional de Recursos Humanos [the National Human Resources Observatory]. He served as administrator at SPI – Administrador da SPI-Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação, SA [Portuguese Society of Innovation Ltd] and of BIOCANT (2005-2009). He is the founder of Necton - Necton – Companhia Portuguesa de Culturas Marinhas e Microalgas [The Portuguese Company for Marine Cultures and Microalgae]; SPI Ventures – Criação e Desenvolvimento de Novos Negócios, SA [Creation and Development of New Businesses Ltd.] and Business Angels’ Creative Wings –SGPS. Founder of Associação Juvenil de Ciência [the Youth Association for Science] and PRODEQ – Associação para o Desenvolvimento da Engenharia Química [Association for the Development of Chemical Engineering].
In 1993 he was one of the selected participants of the seventh edition of the JEEP programme – Jovens Empresários de Elevado Potencial [Young Businessmen of High Potential]. He is the author of several books such as Testemunhos da Qualidade em Portugal [“Testaments to Quality in Portugal”]; Inovação e Qualidade [“Innovation and Quality”]; Instituições de Ensino e Sociedade do Conhecimento [“Educational Institutions and the Knowledge Society”], and O Futuro da Qualidade em Portugal [“The Future of Quality in Portugal”].
He was distinguished on many occasions, namely with the Feigenbaum Award from the ASQ and was accepted as an Associate Member of the International Academy for Quality.
