Full Professor at the Faculty of Sport Sciences and Physical Education at the University of Coimbra, he coordinates two Master’s degree courses, one in the Teaching of Physical Education and the other in Leisure and Local Development, in addition to the Doctoral programme in Tourism, Leisure and Culture, which is offered via both FCDEF and FLUC. He is currently directing his research efforts toward the area of the sociology of the body and of leisure, and is responsible for the research area entitled “The body and its new subjectivities.”. He recently had three books published to the following theme: Os lugares do lazer [“Places of leisure”], IDP (2005); Olhares sobre o lazer [“Perspectives on leisure”], CEB (2007); and O corpo e a política da vida [“The Body and the Politics of Life”], CEB (2009). He has taken part in JNICT, IIE, PAFID and FCT projects. He speaks at conferences and is a guest lecturer at foreign universities; in addition, he has also written many articles in the areas of the sociology of education and educational policy. He has edited several books in these areas of expertise, namely: Culturas de Escola e Identidades dos Professores [“School culture and teachers’ identity”], Educa (1993); A Escola e o Espaço Local. Políticas e Actores [“The school and the local space.
