In A Apologia (“The Apology”) in which João Soares de Brito defends the poetry of the prince of poets of Spain, Luís de Camões is enmeshed in a controversy which reveals his importance and shows how he was read in the 17th century. This study aims to shed light on a series of aspects concerning the critical reception of Camões during this period, not only with regard to the Graeco-Latin matrix on which he drew (particularly Aristotle and Horace), but also to the updating that took place during the literary Baroque.
The full text of the Apology is published in appendix, thus making accessible a work which has not been published since the princeps edition of 1641 by the Lisbon publisher Lourenço de Anveres.
