This study traces the history of Freud’s presence in Portugal from the start of the 20th century until the commemoration of the centenary of his birth half a century later. While his presence was not strongly felt amongst the general public, writings of the period suggest that he had some influence on intellectual and scientific circles of the day (particularly in psychology and psychiatry).
In this context, this work sheds light on the intellectual, scientific, diagnostic and therapeutic reception of Freud in Portugal, drawing upon relevant texts by respected Portuguese scientists.
