In September 1944, Portugal began to import a regular supply of penicillin from the US. The Portuguese Red Cross scrupulously controlled the supply and distribution of the antibiotic. In 1945, as world production increased, penicillin began to be distributed through regular channels. The analysis of archive material concerning the reception and distribution of penicillin enabled the author to ascertain how they took place and present case study regarding the first treatments with the antibiotic in Portugal, in Coimbra University Hospitals.
