In the series of chronicles presented in this book, Portuguese researchers broach a subject that has made great scientific and technological advances in the area of biomedicine: stem cells. These illustrated chronicles were published monthly in the newspaper Diário de Coimbra between December 2011 and May 2012, and resulted from a popular science project entitled "I want more and better cells! Stem Cells: What are they? Where are they? What are they for?", an initiative from the Centre for Neurosciences and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra (CNC), within the COMPETE Programme - Média Ciência.
This book aims to help make the public more informed in order to allow them to issue opinions and take more conscious decisions about the application of stem cells. It also aims to make the reader more aware that scientific research into stem cells is progressing rapidly and that some of these studies are taking place very close to home in Portuguese laboratories.
