"I put so much enthusiasm into recording these
meetings that I ran the risk of hearing it said, most unjustly, that this was
my own personal project!... [...] But I do have a stubborn belief in the
transcendent value of Camões’ work, with its multiple meanings, as an
expression of Portugal’s survival in terms of culture and language, as well as
the peoples of Africa and America, who in their own way, and without jeopardizing
their national individuality, share with us these resources that are not esteemed
by their value on stock markets or by oscillations in the balance of payment.
For this reason, I have spent over 15 years waiting for the moment when the Centre, and the Studies that it cultivates, could be fully affirmed in the light of this symbolically promising spring. With Camões, it could well say: "I'd have served such a love even longer if life weren’t so short”!
Let us hope that the future will compensate us for this long wait, not only for me but for others, who will better be able to achieve what I have been unable to.
For today, it is enough of a reward for all of us involved in the preparation of this 6th International Meeting of Camões Studies to know that our efforts were not in vain… to enable us to learn new things, of course, but above all, so that we can assume, decisively and enthusiastically, the role that Camões Studies expects of us as teachers and researchers."
Aníbal Pinto de Castro (excerpt from the Opening Session of the 6th International Meeting of Camões Studies)
