Synopsis:

As the author points out in his Preface, there were few academic studies published in Portugal at the beginning of the century on subjects related to the Capital Market; hence, the interest in this 2nd edition. Though this was written in 1906 as a doctorate thesis, the language is easy to read, and perfectly accessible to first-year students of economics, management or law. Some chapters are also particularly appealing from the cultural perspective.
A third reason has to do with the topicality of some of the subjects: conflicts of interest amongst stock brokers, speculation and representativity of stock prices, ownership of stock exchanges, operational hazards in transactions, etc. Even with the new telecommunications and information technologies, the markets continue to serve human beings with all their irrationalities.
This edition is released to commemorate 20 years of the promulgation in 1991 of the Code of the Securities Market (commonly known as the Sapateiro Code), which broke dramatically with the framework existing till them, based on the Commercial Code of 1888.
