The main objective of this volume was to provide a critical interrogation by historians, philosophers, specialists in political science, ideas, law, economics, education, communication, information, sciences, and arts. Thus, it has given rise to diverse interpretations, frameworks, configurations and reconfigurations, and angles of analysis which will certainly provoke a keen reflection amongst readers. It continues to be fundamental to rethink and question thematic fields in the light of theoretical and conceptual analyses, but also of processes, dynamics, relations, explanatory potential of our contemporary society. It is thus that this book is understood, with many contributions that stimulate and enrich the reflection about Other Combats for History. ‘Combats for History’ was of course the title of a famous book by Lucien Febvre in the 1950s. This recomposition gives new importance to all the kinds of history, while maintaining the sense of rigour that was somehow pursued in the original. Thus, it aims to analyse the sense of history in its various areas. The authors were asked not to present their own research in their different areas — although their contributions might of course be underpinned by this —, but to reflect upon the meaning of it in the sphere of history, understood as a social and human science. It thus aimed to discuss the object and method of history in various areas, equating its various problems. This was what also happened — we are convinced of that. But it is ultimately for the reader to judge.
