Prof. Fernando Pinto Coelho (1912-1999) dedicated his whole life to the University of Coimbra. Here in the Department of Chemistry, he was a Master and Professor, a researcher and “promotor” of research groups, with a remarkable career stretching over more than five decades. As a teacher, his lectures left profound marks on countless students. As a researcher, his projects were of great interest for the period in which they took place and in the scientific context of Portugal. As a promotor of research groups, he will remain forever connected to the training of those teams that went on to put chemistry research at a top international level. Bearing witness to this activity is the Nuclear Chemistry and Radiochemistry Study Centre, which he directed for decades on end; and the Groups of Electronic Paramagnetic Resonance, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Photochemistry, Raman Vibrational Spectroscopy, and Theoretical Chemistry which were set up in the department. He was also famously involved in the Coimbra Geophysics Institute and the Centre for Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics set up in it, and his action in the Committee for the Modernization of Secondary Education in Chemistry in Portugal. This work summarizes the historical traces of this multiple activity and records the testimonies of some of those that lived and worked with him.
