This volume pays homage to D.Francisco Manuel de Melo in the wake of a commemoration that formed the pretext for new reflections on this unusual personality and his vast oeuvre: the fourth centenary of his birth (1608-2008). The studies included seek to contextualize his vast output in a rigorous and up-to-date way within the aesthetic context of the Iberian Baroque. The volume is divided into three interconnected sections: Baroque Forms and Imaginary(ies); Poetics of the Baroque; and Baroque Modes of Writing in D. Francisco Manuel de Melo. It thus aims to offer the public a model of reading that cuts across Melo’s entire oeuvre, reflecting on the various forms of artistic expression and the way in which D. Francisco Manuel’s multifaceted texts reflect an unusually modern vision of 17th century culture, society and politics, arising from its different experiential and cartographic trajectories.
