In December 2009, a conference was organized by the
Department of Philosophy, Communication and Information of the Faculty of
Letters, University of Coimbra, with the aim of bringing together a series of
interdisciplinary contributions that would bring new reflections upon one of John
Stuart Mill’s most emblematic works: On Liberty. Thus, the University of
Coimbra joined the commemorations of the 150th anniversary of the publication
of this book by one of the most important 19th century British
philosophers, thereby contributing to the reflections on this important subject.
The texts presented here bring together contributions from various academic areas, such as law, philosophy, communication and political science. They are the result of an intense day of work and reflection, in which seven lectures were given on a variety of subjects and with a variety of focuses. This book is thus the fruit of these contributions and aims to offer the general public various reflections about a benchmark of modern liberalism and one of the most revolutionary concepts of humanity – liberty.
