From the mid-16th century on, the University of Coimbra became the greatest commissioner in the artistic field, immediately after the Crown.

Throughout the generations, its artistic heritage was accumulated, creating a notable collection of historical and aesthetic testimonies from the past, which stands out in the national and international context in the most varied domains, with special relevance to architecture, sculpture, painting, decorative tiles, and tapestry.
