Losartan Drug-Plant Interaction | Milk Thistle, Mint, Boldo and Artichoke
Patients with hypertension are considered to be population at risk in this COVID-19 protection plan, and therefore they should pay special attention to the balance of their therapeutic plans.
Losartan is a medicine indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart failure and reduced risk of stroke.
Plants used often as hepatoprotective, such as Milk Thistle, Mint, Boldo, and Artichoke contain as main active substances Silymarin, Linalool, Boldine, and Chlorogenic and Caffeic Acids, respectively. These active substances are inhibitors of the isoenzymes P450 (CYP) 2C9 and 3A4 responsible for the elimination of the drug. When taken together they can increase the toxicity of the drug, even if in this case the initial molecule is a pro-drug. Also, it may induce instability in blood pressure.
