The Energy Box project organized, in cooperation with the University of Azores, the International Workshop on Energy Efficiency for a More Sustainable World, University of Azores, Ponta Delgada, 14-16 September 2012. http://www.energyefficiency.uac.pt/
This event was aimed at providing an interdisciplinary perspective on energy efficiency, and it gathered researchers and practitioners working in energy efficiency from technology to economics, environmental and social sciences, policy design and implementation and behavioural sciences. It involved more than 60 participants from 10 countries, namely Portugal, Brazil, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States of America. Communications covered cover a wide range of topics related with energy efficiency, including strategies in buildings, grid management issues, demand side management and demand response approaches, energy policies, the role of behaviours, the social, economic and environmental impacts, and energy efficiency case studies. Two keynote speakers, Prof. Reinhard Madlener (RWTH Aachen University, Germany) and Prof. Marija Ilic (Carnegie Mellon University, USA) provided fascinating insights on energy efficiency, particularly on the rebound effect and sustainable electricity services, respectively, which undoubtedly enriched the discussion. Several MIT-Portugal Program PhD students took this opportunity to present their on-going research.
A special issue of Energy Policy, one of the leading journals in energy published by Elsevier, is being organized with selected contributions presented at the workshop.
