Today we congratulate Francisco Duarte, student of the Doctoral Program in Transportation Systems of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of UC, for winning the BIG Smart Cities 2017 competition. The student competed with the PAVNEXT technology project - Pavement Energy Efficient Extractor, an alternative to speed bumps, which allows a reduction in the number of road accidents. It also allows the production of electric energy using the passage of vehicles.
A team of researchers from the Centre for Neurosciences and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra and from the Research Institute for Life Sciences and Health -University of Minho- have discovered that a molecule released by stem cells increases the "communication channel" (axon) between neurons. The result is innovative because it focuses on the central nervous system and can be applied to Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or vertebro-medullary lesions.
The UC Summer University (UV) starts next weekend! From 16 to 21 July, the UV 9th edition will welcome more than 300 participants from different parts of the country and the world, who will get to know the best of what is done at the University of Coimbra. UV offers 21 knowledge areas this year.
Ciência Viva no Verão em Rede is back. From 15 July to 15 September, several entities of the UC and the city join together to celebrate science. In Coimbra, there will be 34 activities ranging from astronomical observations, talks, scientific experiments in the street, readings of short stories, among others. Do not miss it!
Applications to the Adriano Lucas Award are open until 13 October. The prize is offered every year and "aims to stimulate work in the area of journalism, which preferably emphasizes issues related to Coimbra and the Beiras Region, and also promote the emergence of young talents"
