The Biological Chemistry Group, at the Coimbra Chemistry Center, has been doing scientific research in the areas of physical chemistry of biological processes. Our general interest is to understand some biological processes from a chemical perspective. We have been approaching the processes both from the properties of simple systems, at molecular level, towards the study of relatively complex biological processes, and from the properties of the overall system towards its requirements at the molecular level. Current work within our laboratories focuses on:
Structure and dynamics of biological membranes and lipid supra-molecular assemblies;
Passive processes in the pharmacokinetics of small amphiphiles and lipid homeostasis;
Protein structure and stability;
Drug discovery and development;
Development of contrast agents for detection of amyloid fibers;
systems analysis of metabolic networks and processes.
