Founded in 1985 and formally constituted by Charter in 1987, the Coimbra Group is an association of long-established European multidisciplinary universities of high international standard. The Coimbra Group is committed to creating special academic and cultural ties in order to promote, for the benefit of its members, internationalisation, academic collaboration, excellence in learning and research, and service to society. It is also the purpose of the Group to influence European educational policy and to develop best practice through mutual exchange of experience.

At the beginning of the creation of the Group, some law schools of the universities concerned decided to join and work together within the framework of the Coimbra during the first phase of the ERASMUS programme. In 1988, the Faculty of Law of Poitiers received the coordination of a Inter-University Cooperation Programme (ICP) in law then comprising the faculties of Law of Coimbra, Leuven, Siena, Leiden, Galway, Salamanca, Pavia, Bologna. The first meeting was held in Leuven in September 1988. During the years that followed, the Faculties of Law of Barcelona, Granada, Groningen, Göttingen, Würzburg, Thessaloniki, Bristol, Aarhus, Dublin, Caen, Edinburgh, (only for 2 years) and Budapest have joined the Group

Every year, the Group meets to discuss and coordinate the different activities. Meetings have organised in: Leuven (1998 / 2005), Coimbra (1989/2006), Siena (1990/2007), Göttingen (1991), Bristol (1992), Groningen (1993), Dublin (1994), Barcelona (1995), Aarhus (1996) , Thessaloniki (1997 / 2009), Poitiers (1998 / 2008), Galway (1999), Caen (2000), Leiden (2001), Würzburg (2002/2012), Bologna (2003), Grenada (2004), Siena (2007), Salamanca (2010 ), Budapest (2011)

The Group aims to :

• facilitate knowledge transfer between its constituent universities by means of staff and student so that they can benefit from the added value given by membership of the Group, whilst respecting the cultural and national identities of individual universities and their individual freedom in learning and research;
• work with European Union (EU) institutions with a view to participating in or organising EU higher education and research projects to the benefit of its members;
• contribute to the debate within Europe on quality in higher education in Law and promote the adoption of quality assurance mechanisms within its member institutions;
• promote the Group worldwide as a source of academic excellence in Europe, with a view to attracting students to the universities in the Group and encouraging academic collaboration and interchange with its members.” (excerpt from the mission statement)

Fondé en 1985, mais formellement constitué par une Charte en 1987, le Groupe de Coimbra est l’association d’Universités européennes d’un haut niveau international et multidisciplinaires. Le Groupe de Coimbra a été spécialement crée dans le but de promouvoir l’internationalisation, la collaboration académique, l’excellence de l’enseignement et de la recherche au service de la société. Les objectifs du groupe est aussi d’influencer la politique européenne de l’éducation et de développer les bonne pratique à travers les échanges mutuels d’expériences.

Ainsi dès l’origine de la création du Groupe, certaines facultés de droit des Universités concernées ont souhaité se rassembler lors de la mise en place du premier programme ERASMUS. Dès 1988, La Faculté de Droit de Poitiers obtient la coordination d’un Programme Inter-Université de Coopération (PIC) en droit, qui rassemblait alors les facultés de Droit de Coimbra, Leuven, Siena, Leiden, Galway, Salamanque, Pavia, Bologna. La 1ère réunion se tient à Leuven en septembre 1988 .Durant les années qui ont suivies, se sont rajoutées les Facultés de Droit de Barcelone, Grenade, Groningen, Göttingen, Würzburg, Thessalonique, Bristol, Aarhus, Dublin, Caen, Edinburgh, (seulement durant 2 années) et enfin de Budapest arrivée dans le groupe en 2009.

Ensuite, ont été organisées chaque année des réunions de travail dans les Facultés suivantes : Leuven (1998 /2005), Coimbra (1989/2006), Siena (1990/2007), Göttingen (1991), Bristol (1992), Groningen (1993), Dublin (1994), Barcelone (1995), Aarhus (1996), Thessalonique (1997 /2009), Poitiers (1998/2008), Galway (1999), Caen (2000), Leiden (2001), Würzburg (2002/2012), Bologne ( 2003), Grenade (2004), Sienne (2007), Salamanque (2010), Budapest (2011)

Les objectifs poursuivis par le Groupe sont de :

• faciliter le transfert de connaissances entre ses universités constituantes par le biais du personnel et des échanges d'étudiants afin qu'ils puissent bénéficier de la valeur ajoutée donnée par la composition du Groupe, tout en respectant les identités culturelles et nationales des différentes universités et de leurs libertés individuelles dans l'apprentissage et la recherche;
• contribuer au débat au sein de l'Europe sur la qualité dans l'enseignement supérieur en droit et en promouvoir l'adoption de mécanismes d'assurance qualité au sein de ses institutions membres;
• travailler avec les institutions l'Union européenne (UE) en vue de participer à l'organisation de l'enseignement supérieur européen et des projets de recherche pour le bénéfice de ses membres;
• promouvoir le groupe dans le monde entier comme une source de l'excellence universitaire en Europe, en vue d'attirer les étudiants vers les universités dans le groupe et encourager la collaboration et les échanges académiques avec ses membres. »(Extrait de la déclaration de mission)
