On 16 February 2011, the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (FEUC) unanimously decided to create the Boaventura de Sousa Santos Chair in Social Sciences.
The Inaugural Lecture, entitled "Seven Challenges in the Face of Seven Threats", took place on 7 October 2011 and was given by Dr. Boaventura de Sousa Santos himself. Watch the Lecture
The purpose of this Chair is to recognise and pay homage to the profoundly important scientific work that Boaventura de Sousa Santos developed while a Professor at FEUC and Director of the Centre for Social Studies. FEUC also aims to use the Chair as a valuable instrument in strengthening both its international projection and the dynamism and quality of its twelve Doctoral Programmes through prestigious international collaborations.
The Chair will have a duration of one semester per year, with the goal of ensuring the presence of a highly renowned social scientist at FEUC during that period. Aside from giving at least one large Public Lecture, the Chair holder will have a work schedule focusing on the Doctoral Programme seminars, namely those that are organised in co-operation with the CES - Centre for Social Studies. They will equally endeavour to complete research work during their time at FEUC, the publication of which will be associated with the Chair itself.
