Carl Linnaeus

Muito tem sido dito e escrito sobre Linnaeus e a sua contribuição fundamental na área da História Natural. Para lá da sua herança nos domínios da descrição, classificação e nomenclatura da diversidade biológica, a sua vida frenética em produção científica constituiu, e constitui, uma inspiração.

A celebração dos 300 anos do seu nascimento no século que agora começa, é feita num planeta empobrecido que, desde então, tem testemunhado a extinção de várias espécies e a redução dramática das áreas selvagens.

Hoje apoiamo-nos no “ombro de muitos gigantes”. Saibamos ver longe e conservar todas as cores que restam do planeta Terra.

Much has been said and written about Linnaeus and his fundamental contribution to Natural History. In addition to his heritage in the domains of description, classification and nomenclature of biodiversity, his frenetic scientific production was, and is, an inspiration.

The celebration of the 300 years of his birth in this new century happens in an impoverished planet that, since then, has witnessed the extinction of various species and the dramatic reduction of the wilderness.

Today, we seat on the shoulders of many giants. May we see far and preserve all the remaining colours of planet Earth.
