I. Research 1. To analyse and reassess established stylistic categories on the basis of the dynamic emerging from the observation of objects and the interpretative nature of contemporary readings. 2. To assess the technical, formal and creative skills embodied in objects in relation to the establishment of long-term artistic cycles whilst, at the same time, interpreting their reproducibility over time. 3. To reinforce the use of scientific interpretative and operational models in areas of research that traditionally lie outside art historiography, involving incursions into philosophy, museumology, communication sciences, archaeology, anthropology, architecture, engineering, mathematics, chemistry and physics as part of the multidisciplinary system of decodification applied to art history. 4. To confront the creative process with the conjunctures that interact with it. 5. To analyse the specific nature of artists' workshops active within the Portuguese sphere of influence by establishing precise outlines for their identity and verifying their links with contemporary aesthetic trends. 6. To analyse the ability to transpose metropolitan models to territories under Portuguese influence and also to verify the reciprocal dynamics that are established. 7. To identify, interpret and classify theoretical, operational and cultural procedures within artistic creation. The investigation will lead to the publication of at least 15 articles in specialist journals, 3 sets of conference abstracts and 2 books. II. The attraction of new lines of research: The multidisciplinary component implies approaching other groups within the Centre in search of more direct affinities. It is therefore planned that the II Forum on Urban Archaeology, to be held in Coimbra in 2008, should be jointly organised. The critical body which constitutes this group and includes PhD and Masters students, will lead to at least 3 PhD theses and 2 Masters dissertations. III. Interaction with other research units: The obligation to forge links with other research centres arises out of the areas covered by current studies. This research work will include more specific approaches within the fields of museumology, architecture, engineering and physics. The team is already involved through projects that have been submitted to the FCT for assessment (POCI/HEC/55536/2004) and (PTDC/HAH/74533/2006). With regard to Renaissance studies, collaboration with the Centre André Chastel (Sorbonne – Paris IV) is also envisaged. IV. Internationalisation The international nature of the research is ensured through links forged by team members with research projects, both in territories under Portuguese influence (Brazil, Argentina and India) and within Europe. It is planned to hold an international conference in Coimbra in 2009 to debate methodologies within art historiography. Another conference on Luso-Italian Baroque in the 18th. century is planned for 2010. V. Repercussions for society: The ability to impose quality standards in relation to heritage preservation. The ability to intervene in the recovery of the material and non-material heritage by working in conjunction with organisations responsible for this work. Team members working together to supervise projects involving the recovery of various heritage collections will provide the key to active involvement in preservation and recovery measures for Portuguese culture.
