Objectives and Achievements

General Objectives

The generic aims were: The perception of procedures in the Lusitanian Province since the early proto-historical contexts till the medieval period. The interior Beira and low Alentejo were the geographical areas brought into focus in this investigation. The peopling patterns were the principal approach of the considered themes.

Main Achievements

Research into protohistory and the Roman era in the Beira Interior region. An initial summary of knowledge of protohistory in this region has been produced, providing a critical analysis of the results of previous research and, in particular, incorporating the data obtained by researchers from the Unit. The summary included the formulation and problems that will guide future work.

With regard to the Roman era in the same region, considerable advances have been made in knowledge of rural settlement patterns.

Collaboration on visitor itineraries, museum catalogues and the mounting of exhibitions in municipal museums following requests from conferences or seminars on archaeology in general or the archaeology of particular regions.

Future Research

Objectives

The geographical area which this research group will investigate is the ancient Roman province of Lusitania. Greater attention will be paid to the area of Lusitania which corresponds to present-day Portuguese territory, although it is intended that contact will be maintained with Spanish institutions, in particular the Mérida National Museum of Roman Art, the Mérida Institute of Archaeology, the University of Extremadura and the University of Huelva, Università Suor Orsola Benincasa (Napoli), CSIC Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (Madrid).

The research will cover an extensive period of time, from the end of the 2nd. or the beginning of the 1st. millennium BC to the end of the ancient world in the 6th. or 7th. centuary AD. In this distant era, socio-political, socio-economic and socio-cultural structures were established due to internal dynamics (since no society remains paralysed for centuries) but predominantly due to external impacts (the most important of which, in Lusitania, was obviously the Roman conquest.) From this perspective, the concept of evolution, either transformed or reconfigured, seem more apt than that of revolution in our long-term understanding of Lusitania.

Given the rarity of written sources for the period in question, the history will have to be constructed mainly from the remains of the material culture, which implies excavation work at selected sites. However, this information will be cross-referenced with other working parties from the same Centre, namely those based in epigraphics and archeogeography.

We will pay particular attention to regional differences on the basis of the belief that major differences have always existed, for example, between the lower Tejo valley and the Beira Interior or between the latter and the Alentejo and Algarve. We intend to seek out these differences, not only in terms of geography or natural resources, but also with regard to cultural factors. Thus we aim to reach an understanding of the deep-rooted reasons for an imbalance which has remained evident throughout modern history and even in the present day situation of the country.

Taking as our reference point the local communities within the study area, we aim to investigate the nature and material form of contacts that were established, both within the Atlantic zone and the Mediterranean world, in order to understand their subsequent dynamics.

With regard to the more distant periods, we hope to be able to define cultural areas that may be related to ethnic groups. This will lead us into a theoretical discussion on the factors shaping identity, namely what defines an ethnic group: race, language, mental attitude or history? and to what extent can difference be integrated into identity?

The definition of ethnic groups will led us to a definition of territories which, in turn, will involve us in a theoretical discussion on borders and the crossing of borders.
