Título: EXSTREAM – Effects of EXotic tree species on STREAM communities and processes: the case of invasion of native forests by Acacia spp

Área Científica: Natural Sciences

Síntese do Projeto: The invasion of native forests by exotic species is a major threat to the structural (communities) and functional (processes) integrity of streams, and thus to ecosystem services. This project addresses the effects of the invasion of native mountain forests by exotic N-fixing tree species on aquatic communities (invertebrates and microbes) and processes (litter decomposition) to shed light on possible mechanisms and consequences of the presence of exotic trees in streams. For this, we will take advantage from a ´natural laboratory` in Lousã mountain, central Portugal, where Acacia species are invading native forests dominated by oaks and chestnuts in some stream basins, while others are still acacia free. We will carry out field surveys, laboratory assays, and meta-analysis to assess the effects of acacia invasion on aquatic communities and processes.
