Título: 3D to 4D printing: can bacterial cellulose make the bridge?
Área Científica: Materials Engineering
Síntese do Projeto: The project will investigate the production and characterization of bacterial cellulose (BC) from different microorganisms that will be used as reinforcement in the production of polymeric nanocomposites. Depending on the hydrophilic or hydrophobic nature of the produced BD, several polymers will be used as matrix for the production of the nanocomposites. They will be used in the additive manufacturing (3D) of biomedical scaffolds; several formulations will be investigated in order to optimize those that are able to promote the bridge between 3D and 4D printing where the produced component will change its properties/characteristics due to the action of an external stimuli such as variations of pH, light or moisture. The most promising composites will be tested in vitro with appropriated prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells lines in order to access their real potential as biomaterials for medical implanted devices.
