The Biblioteca Joanina, the ornate 18th century Baroque library of the University of Coimbra, owes its name to the monarch under whose aegis it was built: João V, the Magnanimous, the name by which he went down in history, who sponsored the building as part of his wide-ranging efforts to promote artistic, cultural and scientific endeavours.
