Brief History

The Chemical Process Engineering and Forest Products Research Centre (CIEPQPF) was established in 1994 with the objective of creating a structured framework for the research activities in the Chemical Engineering Department (DEQ) of FCTUC. These research activities are currently organised into 4 research groups:

  • Particles, Polymers and Biomaterials Technology (PPB)
  • Process Systems Engineering (GEPSI)
  • Computing & Materials (CEM)
  • Environment, Reaction, Separation and Thermodynamics (GERST)

This research unit was evaluated as Excellent in 2008 and as Very Good (22/25) in 2014.

Research activities have been coordinated by an executive board (director plus two vice-directors) and by a scientific committee where the four research groups are represented.

Mission and goals

  • To reinforce the acquired know-how, competencies and skills in strategically-defined critical Chemical Engineering-related research areas;
  • To develop integrated methodologies for materials, products and chemical plant design and development;
  • To reduce chemical processes environmental impacts and to develop “greener” ways of production;
  • To promote, to reinforce and to intensify the extensive and multilateral scientific cooperation with other national and international research centres and industries;
  • To provide sound technological support to industrial partners by strengthening the efforts of applied development with industry;
  • To generate and to disseminate scientific and technical knowledge, and to support education and training in Chemical Engineering and related areas;
  • To participate in activities involving the surrounding society, as well as to strength the provision of services to industry.
