Dominika Swolkien received her M.A. in
Spanish Philology from the University of Cracow (Poland). After further
study in Portugal at the University of Coimbra (Licenciatura em Estudos
Portugueses e Ingleses), she got a grant from the Fundação para a
Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) in Lisbon to do her Ph.D. dissertation on
the variety of Cape Verdean Creole (CVC) spoken on the island of São
Vicente with Prof. John Holm at the University of Coimbra.
The
main goal of her dissertation is to explain the genesis and development
of this unusually acrolectal variety of CVC. The FCT grant enabled her
to do extensive fieldwork among the basilectal speakers on the island
(2003-2005). It also enabled her to attend post-graduate courses at the
School of Oriental and African Studies, London (Fall/Winter 2003/2004)
and to conduct research in Portuguese and British libraries, as well as
attend international conferences.
In London, she benefited
from the contact with young researchers from the Hans Rausing
Endangered Language Program and learned about the wide range of
possibilities ofnew multimedia technology in linguistics.
Dominika Swolkien was elected secretary of Associação de Crioulos de Base Lexical Portuguesa e Espanhola. She
is part of a growing group of young and enthusiastic descriptive
linguists doing research on creole languages at the University of
Coimbra. She is currently living in Mindelo, Cape Verde, teaching at
IESIG and finishing her doctoral dissertation. Her conference papers
and publications include the following:
