Amílcar Falcão

Amílcar Falcão received his bachelor degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (1989), his Doctorate (1995) and Aggregation from the University of Coimbra, where he is a Full Professor since 2007. He was the Director of the Faculty of Pharmacy (2010-2012) and of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research (2013-2019). Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra (2011-2019).

With an extensive scientific production with over 230 scientific papers indexed in journals, and more than 5,000 citations, he has a vast experience in the supervision of research work (Masters’, Ph.D. and Post-Docs), including around 40 students, of which 34 have already concluded their theses. He is regularly invited as a reviewer, and belongs to the editorial board of several scientific journals. He has already received several national and international awards, which reinforce the visibility and quality of the work he has been carrying out throughout his career.

He is the Technical Director of the company ICNAS Produção (a company owned 100% by the University of Coimbra). He participated actively in obtaining the first radiopharmaceutical drug developed and registered in Portugal (Fluodeoxyglucose [18F] UC). One should highlight his contribution to the development of the first Portuguese drug to be marketed (Eslicarbazepine Acetate, Antiepileptic, Zebinix®) and, more recently, Opicapone (Antiparkinsonian; Ongentys®) [BIAL Laboratories].
